Power of Multicolour 3D Printing: Bring Your Creations to Life!
3D printing has revolutionised how we create objects, and adding multiple colours takes it to the next level. Whether you're designing prototypes, artistic models, or functional parts, multicolour 3D printing allows you to bring your prints to life with stunning visual effects.
In this post, we’ll break down everything you need to know about multicolour 3D printing, including:
By the end of this guide, you'll have a clear understanding of how to create stunning multicolour prints, no matter your experience level.
Let’s dive in!
Multicolour 3D printing is when a 3D printer uses multiple colours of filament to create a print with different shades, patterns, or gradients. Instead of printing in just one solid colour, the printer can switch between filaments (manually or automatically) to add variety to the final object.
This can be done automatically using a CFS (Creality Filament System), which you can learn more about here: CFS (Creality Filament System).
Some printers have multiple extruders that can print different colours at the same time, while others use a single extruder but swap filaments at certain layers. There are also special filaments that change colour as they print, giving cool rainbow effects!
This is convenient for many reasons, but the main reason is that there’s no need to paint anymore! You can simply install your CFS, leave your print to it, and BAM! One multicolour print is finished in hours.

Multicolour 3D printing is a total game-changer, offering benefits that go beyond just looks. Here’s why you should consider it for your next project:
Looks Amazing:
Add vibrant, eye-catching details to your prints. Multicoloured designs bring your creations to life and make them pop.
Saves Time:
No more painting or post-processing. Your print comes out looking finished in one go, saving you hours of work.
More Flexible Designs:
Mix materials and colours for added functionality. Imagine a strong frame in one colour and flexible parts in another.
One of the main challenges with multicolour printing is something called 3D print bleeding.
Increase the purge rate:
Increasing the purge rate clears the nozzle when switching colours, preventing colour bleeding and improving print quality in multi-colour designs.
Slow Print Time:
The print took almost 4 days to complete, which can be quite a long time, especially if you're working on multiple projects.
Material Waste:
There was considerable material waste, particularly with the poops and purge tower for this model. This can add up quickly and affect overall efficiency.
Limited Flexibility for Orientation:
Some parts of the print could have been crisper if printed separately and at their own optimal orientations, but this wasn’t possible due to the limitations of the process.
Multicolour 3D printing, once mastered, can be highly effective in helping you create clean, vibrant, and intricate designs for your 3D prints.

Install CFS on Your 3D Printer
You can easily install the CFS on 3D printers like the Creality K2 Plus Combo or the Creality K2 Plus. For the Creality K1 series, it’s optional, but you can install it using the Creality K1 Series CFS Upgrade.
Choose Filaments
Select the colours or materials you want to use for your print and load them into the CFS system. Explore our range of filaments here.
Adjust Settings and Slice/Colour the Print
Set up your slicing software to handle the colour transitions or swaps between filaments.
Start Printing
Hit print and let the CFS system manage the colour changes, resulting in a stunning multicolour creation!
